In cases where couples have unexplained infertility or have had repeated IVF cycle failures, cycles with poor embryo quality or recurrent miscarriage they may wish to undergo sperm DNA fragmentation testing to eliminate an additional male factor.

How is sperm DNA damaged?

Sperm DNA can be damaged by various factors in similar ways to the cells in the rest of our body. However, sperm are unique in that they cannot repair this damage.

To list just a few ways in which sperm can be damaged:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Stress
  • Varicoceles
  • Medications

What the DNA Fragmentation Test involves

As part of the DNA Fragmentation test a full Semen Analysis will be performed first, the sample is then frozen and sent off to the genetics lab for DNA testing.

The results can take up to 4 weeks to come back and the lab team will call you to discuss these as soon as they are back.
